Fall Maintenance Tips for Wood Fence Owners

Fall has officially arrived! With that in mind, here are our top fall maintenance tips for wood fence owners:

Restain (If Necessary)

This is the most important fall maintenance tip. Of course, most of our wooden fences come pre-stained with high-quality stains, so if your wooden fence was installed in the last 2-3 years and we did stain it for you, you should be good. However, if your fence was not stained before we installed it, you need to apply a waterproof stain, and you should do that this fall before the cold weather gets to your fence.

Wondering why staining is important? Check out this blog article that we wrote back in July.

Keep Your Fence Clear

Don’t let branches, excessive amounts of leaves or ice and snow sit on your fence. Keep your boards and posts clear! That excess water may seep into the wood, causing it to swell. This can cause your fence to deteriorate more quickly, and can also result in rotting.

Check Your Fence for Problems

Most of us tend to venture into our yards much less in the fall and winter. However, it is important to keep an eye on your fence and to watch out for any potential problems, including cracking, splitting, or signs of decay. Before the snow flies, walk the perimeter of the fence and check each fence post for stability. If the posts feel lose, you can add some extra concrete for additional support.

Did You Know?

At A & G Fencing, we’ll even repair/work on fences that we didn’t originally install. If you have a wood fence in need of some attention, please get in touch! We’ll be happy to come and take a look.
