When you think of a concrete fence, you most likely think of security or privacy before aesthetics. Traditionally, wood or metal fences have been used as a feature within the overall look of your house and yard, whereas concrete is used for function above all else. However, with advancements in precast concrete, the tables may be turning.
Pros
Not only is concrete long-lasting and durable,it also involves almost no maintenance for you (that’s a pretty big plus!). It may be more expensive upon installation, but without having to buy stain or upkeep products that are involved with other materials, it can be cheaper in the long run. Concrete has also proved it can last for over 50 years, which ups the resale value of your home as it’s a feature that will last well into the future.
Over the past few years, there have been huge advancements in the aesthetics of concrete, as you can now have it mimic other materials fairly convincingly. It also tends to be much more soundproof than wood, which is a bonus if you live near a major road.
Cons
Concrete fences are permanent. No way around it, once installed, they’re there to stay. So, if you’re indecisive, or aren’t sure you’ll like the look of it, better to stay away from concrete. They are also a huge investment, costing much more than your average wood or metal fence with upfront costs. Especially if you’re building on uneven ground and require a foundation, it can spike the cost even more.
Also, even with all the advancements in making concrete look less like concrete, it still doesn’t pull of the warm and homey look that wood does.
