Well, it's that time of year again! If you haven’t already done so, there are still steps that you can take to winterize your home and yard this season, your including your fence. After spending the time and money to build the perfect fence, the last thing that you want is for a cruel winter to leave you with damage. To avoid entering spring with rust and rot, follow our quick tips to preparing your fence for the winter months.
The first step to winterizing your fence is to prepare it to be sealed. To do this you will need to ensure that there is no existing damage. If you find that rot has invaded your fence, it is best to remove and replace the section that has damage. Just like you need a good foundation to build a fence on, you will also need to prepare a solid fence to be sealed.
Most importantly, you will want to ensure that your fence is protected with an appropriate sealant. These sealants act as water-repellant barriers, and defend your fencing against moisture from snow and rain, which cause rust and rot. Sealants can be purchased from most hardware stores and typically last between 5 and 10 years. Don’t forget to cover any hinges, latches, and locks!
If you are looking for a little less winterizing work, a good choice is to have A&G Fencing install a Woodguard fence around your property. Woodguard is designed to withstand extreme temperatures and comes with a 20 year warranty.
The next step to saving your beautiful fencing is to prevent issues before they can arise. Walk along the fence line and remove any debris, including leaves, weeds, and tall grass. What appears as simple yard waste can be detrimental to your fence.Ideally, you do not want anything leaning against your fence, as it can act as a barrier that traps moisture and creates rust or rot in your fence line.
We hope that these tips to winterize your fence will help keep your fence in tip-top shape, all year round!
